Best Baking Clay for Sculpting

It is very easy to work with and add on and it sticks to it. I watered down the glue between my small pieces. I have a spray battle close by and I smooth it out with my wet fingers. I keep the clay in a tight container and prepare it half an hour before I use it. I clean my tools after I finish. I am 58 years old and my hands never feel dry.

👤I bought my clay at Michael's store a day ago. The smell was the first thing that hit me when I opened it. It was a very unpleasant smell to me at first. I've worked with many different clays and a few different air-dry clays and this one has the strongest smell that I've encountered so far. When fully dry, it goes away. I had to knee it several times and add a couple drops of water because it seemed to dry out very quickly. The color of the clay in the package is grey, not white. The clay is moist. It is a white color when it dries. I've sculpted the lower torso and one thigh joint of a ball jointed doll since yesterday. When I first opened the package, the clay seemed difficult to work with, but continuously using it helped remove that problem! The clay can't stick to itself if it's either wet or dry. When it becomes sticky to your fingers is when I find the best consistency to stick it with another piece of clay. If you want to get an even stickage, I would recommend twinning the area. To smooth it onto another piece of clay, you should use your fingers to press down firmly at the edge of the clay. The metal clay tools work well. Another reviewer pointed out that the clay's texture is very dense. If you cut deeply into your clay, the fibers will cause the clay to drag down, which will make it hard for you to put details on your project. The fibers of the clay make it so when your project is dry and you need to add more clay, it doesn't cause a problem. Adding wet clay to dry clay made sculpting it easier. The paper clay has a very smooth finish. You don't need much more than water on your finger tips to rub the clay. The clay becomes very cold when dried. I'm pretty sure there is science behind it, but when it's fully dry, it doesn't feel like it's in the fridge. It's a good way to know if it's really dry all the way through. It will be warm. It's much easier to create fine details when the project is dry. An exacto knife can be used to remove the dry pieces. If your projects are dry, they don't break away in chunks. It's like you're shaving away dry clay. If you do this, you can smooth out your projects with a small amount of water on your finger tips. A dried product will still react to water. I recommend that you seal your project with a waterproof finish to increase its longevity and protect it from the elements. I wouldn't recommend this clay for an outdoor clay project even with a waterproof sealant. It is still more fragile than a clay baked craft. It was baked! If you want to speed up your dry time for larger projects, you can put the clay in the oven for 30 minutes at a time. It works well. The smooth texture of the clay makes it very easy to paint onto, so that is another plus. This clay dries my hands out a lot. It was mildly uncomfortable for the night because it absorbed all of the water in my hands for a few hours. It is difficult to wash off when it dries on your skin. If you can, keep some aquaphor lotion with you. Despite some flaws, I like this paper clay, and after figuring out how to use it, I would use it again. I've included some pictures with and without flash settings to show the difference in color when wet and dry, as well as the smooth finish.

👤I've used this product since I started sculpting. The clay is much harder than regular polymer, so you can get more detail with it. You have to roll it around a bit for it to be soft before you use it, but it stays soft for a long time after that. Once you have finished sculpting, you can bake it in the oven and paint it. I've seen people drill in to it to add more pieces to the sculpture. I bake and cool quickly. The sculptures I've completed with it are attached.

👤Super Sculpey Firm and Medium Blend act more like plasticine modeling clay than any other clays I've tried. Compared to the Med. Firm is harder to knead at first. It's soft to work with after it's conditioned. It can hold a little more of its own weight, it can take a little more handling, and it can carve a little better than the medium blend can. It blends just as well as medium blend. I would have a hard time telling it from medium blend. I'm sure I'd get them mixed if I were using them at the same time. If you don't have a pasta machine to roll it with, or a significant other with larger hands, I suggest using the 'two handed method' to condition the clay. Simply cup one hand over the other and let your fingers help each other push and knead the clay. Two thumbs push against eight fingers that are braced against each other. You'll be surprised how easy it is to use this two hand kneading technique. Have fun sculpting! Carol.

👤I don't think I'll ever be able to go back to the original sculpey, this clay has the strength as well as the firmness. I can't get this from my local craft store. I will be ordering more.

👤The material was weak after baking. The oven temp is a big issue. I bought a temperature for the oven. The oven runs at a lower temperature than it is set at. I adjusted the baking temp to make sure it was stable. At first it is a bit hard but once you start working with it it becomes softer. I wonder how soft the other types are. Great product. It was easy to work with. You can check on line for tips and tricks. There are lots of videos and articles to help you get the most out of it.

👤I got this clay recently. The box was not wrapped in plastic when I opened it. I have other firm clay that is much more flexible. I have to make it soft enough to work with. I love the clay I've gotten from Sculpey, but this has not been a good experience. I wonder if it was a returned item or if Amazon didn't check to make sure it was packaged correctly. I will buy Sculpey again. No one is perfect.

👤I have used this type of clay before, so I am familiar with the look, texture and feel of it, but when I unpack it, it felt dryer than normal. The texture is not easy to mold. It feels like it was left out and came into contact with air for too long. Trying to sculpt something is very difficult and I am not satisfied with it. It seems like it is a good product from the majority of the reviews. Such a sad day!

👤This is a great deal. We both have fun making things. I bought this for my daughter. Baking doesn't cause it to stain pans and it stays together. We are very happy with this purchase. I think it is a good idea to get this for a kid under 6 when you can get less expensive items, as this activity is great for their fine motor skills when they are young. I don't think the age range they give is right, but I think an older child would appreciate it most, because it is a quality product.

👤This is a good item for beginners. It is sticky but if you let it cool down a bit it will fix it. When heated too much by hand, it becomes sticky. I made a few items with this. I am glad I tried it.

It's undesirable in a clay, but it didn't matter for my project. The colors had different sheens after being baked. It would be a problem if you didn't paint it. Some were shiny and some were not. I painted my project. It was a good way to get a lot of clay for a lot of money. It came with a lot of tools. I received everything as pictured.

👤The clay was so dry that it wouldn't mold into anything. It was difficult. The accessories are great but you can't use the clay that came with them to make them. My daughter was not happy. I had to buy more clay from the craft store because of the Christmas gift. She could use the tools.

👤The kit came with no red at all. There are no necklace chains or charms. It is nearly impossible to mold, and when you bake it, it smells like poison. I had to air out my house because it smelled bad and everyone had headaches. My children received it for Christmas. The picture of the girl holding it is not accurate. The box is half the size.

👤It's great for beginners to use without worry. This stuff is still very good. It's easy to work with. I advise you to work on top of a ceramic surface in a cool room to help keep the clay cool. Depending on what you're doing, it becomes softer and harder to work with as your hands warm. If you're looking for a softer clay, this could be a benefit. There are a couple quick notes. I bake my pieces at 230F for an hour instead of the box says at 275F. Baking at a lower temperature for a longer period offers a harder end result. 2. Thin pieces will be flexible. Bracelets, rings, and anything else that is thin should use some internal support. Maybe wire. This isn't a problem of the product as much as it is a limitation of the material. Other brands are a bit more sturdy, but thin pieces will have this effect.

👤I bought this stuff to make Christmas ornaments with my kids fingerprints in the center. They came out well. My 5 year old helped me. He loved it! He made his own play dough cutouts. The putty is a little hard at first, but it became very easy to work with after about 1-2 minutes of kneading. The more you play with it, the easier it becomes. I used gold glitter paint, letter stampers, and finished out projects with a clear coat only, because I wanted a more finished looking project. You don't need a clear coat. Either way, it looks great. I recommend this product to everyone. I was able to get my 1 year olds fingerprints on the clay.

👤This was fun to experiment with because I'm not a big fan of clay. Since I'm a beginner, I take a long time to make things, so when I was close to finishing my design, other areas broke when I tried to adjust the piece. It's soft enough to work with after you knead/roll it, but once you let it sit and work on another area, it's not a smooth kind of soft. It bakes very quickly and I put aluminum foil in the oven to keep it from sagging. I made a big mistake when I sprayed Modge Podge on it after baking it and painting it, it made the sculpture sticky. I decided to buy the Sculpey Glaze and it worked out just fine.

👤This is now in white. I used to use this in college when it was only a nude/ pinkish clay color. If you want a white object, these don't have to be painted. I used these to make ornaments. I baked it according to the instructions, after rolling the clay out, using star and heart cookie cutters, and baking it all white with a hint of gold. I found a gold K09901A00 leafing pen on Amazon and finished them up with it. I can use them for a long time. I love the white Sculpey.

👤It is amazing. I made pins out of them. They were very easy to use. If you are painting on top, sculpley has a gloss coat that you can buy to prolong the life of the paint.

It was easy to bake in the oven. I baked them on a lined try and turned the temperature down a bit to make sure they didn't get too hot. We made ornaments out of clay and I'm happy with them. The kids had a lot of fun making them. I would recommend this product for its price, ease of use, andVersatility.

👤Everything should either be soft pastels or brilliant colors. White has it's place. It's great for making custom colors. It's more economical that way. Let's say you have a large project and you want a shade of blue. Can't find one you like? Or the one that only comes in 2oz. blocks? Easy solution. You can mix a little at a time with the White Sculpey to get the lighter blue you want. Voila! A lot of blue. Happy crafting!

The end product was very nice. The end product of conditioning the clay is very nice, even though it is not easy. It's worth the money.

It came in a set of white and I didn't need any other colors. The white is great because I was able to paint it after it cooled down. It is easy to mistake the degrees Celsius for the Fahrenheit in the instructions, so be sure to set your oven to the right temperature. Despite being expensive, it was a great product.

A user manual, cutting/shaping tools, a silicone mold, and some other jewelry hooks and charms are included in this set. The heavy weight of the box made it hard for it to break, but luckily it did not. I like to organize things by color, so as I was nearing the end of doing so, I realized that one of the clay blocks had a piece of hair in it. I opened the package to confirm that it was a strand of hair. I put that one aside in hopes of reaching out to the company to let them know that I didn't want to go through the hassle of returning it. I checked the rest and didn't find any issues. I used the clay to make charms. I agree with others that the clay is soft and sticky, so you may not be able to do much detail. It is good for beginners or people who just want to do simple shapes. A decent set.

👤I am really disappointed in this clay. I bought it for my daughter. Several packages of clay are incredibly hard and some of the clay is workable. After adding baby oil and trying to condition the clay, it still isn't usable. I would have bought some Sculpty clay from the store. I would not buy clay if you wanted consistent clay.

👤You get what you paid for, but it works. When you first get it, it is dry and flaky. It needs to be worked on. Don't be fooled. The warmer it gets the better. You can bake it at a higher temp. The oven only goes down to 170. You get a lot. Of colors. I decided to mix a few for more of each color because I found many of the shades were the same. They are tiny and clay so it will break off pretty quickly. I kept an eye on the bake at that low temp. There is no house.

It's not bad, but on top of the missing things, it's pretty disappointing. You should buy the colors and accessories you need, not the kit, for all that is missing.

I learned from my mistake and will stick to Sculpey. We are not first time users of clay. A family of crafter use the clay on a daily basis for different pieces.

👤If you have experience, it's a good clay. I wouldn't recommend this for a beginner because it's very sticky. Smaller items that have a lot of details are the right clay to work with. It wasn't enough to stop the clay from sticking to everything. It works well for mixing with other brands that need to be softened or color mixed. I won't be buying this again. When you get a black clay that turns out to be dark blue or purple, it messes up the whole project, because there is no color label or names to tell you what color you are using. The storage box on the website says that the company doesn't have the product, so you can't look for more information.

👤There is a lot of colors. There are some doubles. I would have thought it would have broken in line segments. Blocks are small but not small, there are a lot of choices. You get a great case with some nifty tools. It's worth the price compared to other options. I might have looked somewhere else without the case. The updated 1/21 is here. I am sorry, but I think that the color of this clay is cheap and will make your hands feel worse if you wash them. It was very disappointing. The case and tools are the only worthwhile parts of the set.

👤Santa brought this to my son. We both had fun. There is a nice assortment of colors. The bakes are well done according to the instructions. The organizers is aweome too. A set like this in a store would cost triple. I will be buying another set soon. Birthday gifts for children can be made by Wild. Or adult in my case!

👤It's too sticky and soft for anything other than play. Blending is almost impossible without crushing your project, and if you need to chop tiny pieces just stick to each other and your blade. It's good for kids to play with but not for artists. Stick with Sculpey.

At first it was tacky but once needed it was perfect. It was easy to mold. There were no stains on our hands or table. I baked a few minutes more than the instructions said. I love it.
